Thordon Bearings Inc.
Charting a New Course with Seawater Lubricated Propeller Shafts
Thordon Bearings designs and manufactures a complete range of bearing and shaftline systems for ships, including propeller shaft bearings, rudder bearings, shaft seals and deck equipment bearings that eliminate oil and grease from ships.
Did you know that over 95% of merchant marine vessels operate with an oil lubricated propulsion system? Unfortunately, 60 million litres of operational oil are discharged from these oil lubricated systems every single year. However, this can be prevented.
The Thordon-Blue Ocean Stern Space (T-BOSS) is a new solution proposed by the Blue Ocean Alliance - a collaboration between ABS, Wartsila, Thordon Bearings, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and CSSC-SDARI designed to eliminate pollution and lower shipbuilding and maintenance costs.
The T-BOSS solution not only eliminates oil pollution from the shaftline, aligning with global sustainability goals, but also delivers substantial operational cost savings. The design is more efficient and easier to maintain than traditional oil-lubricated shaftlines, making it a cost-effective solution for shipping companies. Moreover, this innovation will assist ship owners in meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations, ensuring compliance and reducing risk.
Unlike many publicly traded companies, the motivation behind the on-going growth and success of Thordon Bearings has not been to enhance shareholder returns, but instead has been to provide a contribution to society in the form of superior products, valued employment, and technological advances that better the environment we live in. At Thordon, we strongly believe we should all play a role in protecting our oceans and seas for future generations.
